Jenelle, Eliana and I ventured north to Armstrong Park in Racine for a 5K run/walk. This one is limited to company employees and their families, and there's no race numbers or official timing, but it's usually a good time.
Jenelle pushed Eliana in the stroller, near the back of the pack, while I ran near the front. Most of the crowd is out for a leisurely jog with their kids, but there are always some 'serious' runners. The 2011 edition was no exception. One guy in a red shirt and shorts darted away from the pack so quickly that I figured there was no way I could ever catch him. I was right. However, I was in the top ten after the first quarter mile. After the first mile, which I ran in 7:00, I was in sixth.
After a second mile of 7:17 that featured a few hills, I picked things up in the third mile (6:43), moving up to third place. I could see the second place runner in the distance. Even though I measured the official course at 3.28 miles (about .17 miles beyond 5K), that wasn't enough space for me to catch him.
I was thrilled to finish with a time of 22:52, an average of about 6:58/mile. I have run faster 5Ks before, but I was quite happy with the result. I think this served as a great tune-up for the Thanksgiving Day 10K in Kenosha.
